Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament

Herbert J. Block, a committed family man and dedicated businessman, died of colon cancer in May 1981. When the disease touched Mr. Block - an officer of Sun Television and Appliance, a vice president of the National Association of Television Merchandisers, and a benevolent supporter of the Charity Newsies - it also touched his family and friends.

Many family members of cancer victims feel helpless as a result of their loss of a loved one to cancer. Others are determined to create something positive and channel their energies toward eradicating this disease. The Block family is an example of a family working together to raise research dollars to promote a cure for cancer. Through their efforts, the Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University is benefiting directly in the areas of cancer research and education.

In memory of Herbert J. Block, his family has made many significant contributions to The James, including the organization of an annual golf tournament which to date has provided over $3.5 million to the cancer program.

Proceeds from the annual Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament have been used for research projects as well as the development of a system for distributing life-saving cancer education materials to patients, families and visitors to The James. In addition, the Block family established a lectureship to acknowledge excellence in the field of oncology.

Held annually, the Block Tournament is one of the most successful private fundraisers in Columbus, Ohio.
