9 James is a 34-bed unit, with primarily private patient rooms that serves patients having surgery for lung and thoracic cancer, bowel and breast cancer and cancer of the genito-urinary system. The unit is equipped with cardiac telemetry capability. Early postoperative management skills, especially pulmonary care for patients having thoracic and abdominal surgery is important for the nurses on this unit to possess. Patient discharge teaching to promote postoperative recovery upon discharge is also an important aspect of caring for 9 James patients.

The unit staff is made up of registered nurses, patient care associates, clinical nurse specialist, and unit clerical associates who work in collaboration with the members of the multidisciplinary team including pharmacists, respiratory therapists and dieticians along with physicians and residents.
