Blood and Marrow Transplantation

Inpatient and Outpatient Blood and Marrow Transplantation

Approximately 130 blood and marrow transplantations are performed annually at The James.  There are 12 private inpatient beds and 12 private outpatient beds dedicated to transplant patients.  Depending on the type of transplant and their clinical condition, some patients may require hospitalization for the transplant, while others may only need to make day-time visits and then return to their homes in the evening.

Patient care is provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of registered nurses, patient care associates, unit clerical associates, patient support associates, patient care resource managers, attending hematologists, oncology fellows, residents, social workers, clinical nurse specialist and nurse practicioners.  Special precautions are taken on the unit to ensure that transplant patients are protected from possible infections.
