Divisions & Programs

The diverse range of divisions and programs at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute brings a broad spectrum of experience and knowledge to our mission of providing the best cancer research, education and treatment.  These institutions offer patients the finest in leading-edge cancer prevention and treatment while giving physicians and healthcare professionals the opportunity to do their best work.

Divisions and programs at The James include:

Blood and Marrow Transplantation – The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at The James serves more than 100 transplant patients a year. The hospital has a multidisciplinary team and a unit with 12 inpatient beds and 12 outpatient beds dedicated to bone marrow transplant patients.

Cancer Genetics – The Human Cancer Genetics Program is located in the Ohio State University College of Medicine and functions under the auspices of the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.  In this program, highly skilled scientists are using advanced technology for the identification, analysis and characterization of genetic alterations associated with cancer susceptibility and development.

Cancer Pain and Palliative Medicine – The Cancer Pain and Palliative Medicine Program at The James offers consultation for treatment of persistent pain, particularly that of cancer patients. Professionals from various specialties work together as necessary to provide the most appropriate treatment for each individual.

Clinical Trials – Clinical trials are an important reason the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center is able to offer our patients the latest cancer treatments. Gynecologic Oncology – These board-certified gynecologic oncologists have been specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive tract and to serve as the primary care oncologist for their patients.

Head and Neck Oncology – Launched in 1977 and directed by David E. Schuller, MD, since its inception, the Head and Neck Oncology Program at The James is at the forefront of national efforts to improve the outcome of patients treated for head and neck malignancies.

Hematology and Oncology – The Division of Hematology and Oncology at The James comprises currently 43 faculty/physicians plus physician trainees and fellows.  Its mission is to provide excellent, compassionate medical care, promising and innovative research, and exemplary teaching focused on cancer and blood disorders.

Integrated Biomedical Science Graduate Program – This unique College of Medicine graduate program includes more than 170 faculty members from 19 departments.  Its theme is "The Biology of Human Disease."

Nursing – With more than 300 registered nurses, the Division of Nursing is an integral part of The James' three-part mission of patient care, research and education.

Orthopaedic Oncology – Musculoskeletal oncology specialists in the OSU Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology lead a multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and radiologists focusing on detection and treatment of bone cancers and soft-tissue sarcomas.

Pathology – Unique within the College of Medicine, the Department of Pathology encompasses a basic science department, a full graduate program and an active clinical department.  It has 36 full-time faculty, 14 residents and six fellows as well as more than $3 million in active research grants.

Radiation Medicine – The Department of Radiation Medicine at The James offers a full spectrum of radiation therapy, including external beam radiation, high-energy photon and electron beam radiation, intraoperative radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy and remote high-dose afterloading.

Surgical Oncology – This division offers a wide variety of services aimed at providing state-of-the-art care to cancer patients.  The surgical oncology physicians are trained in general surgery, have been certified by the American Board of Surgery, have received additional training in surgical oncology and are active members in the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Urologic Surgery – Physicians in this division provide surgical and medical care for genitourinary disorders in men, women and children.  The physicians have special interest and expertise in urologic oncology and pediatric oncology.
