James Care for Life Classes

The JamesCare for Life Quarterly Class Series offers valuable information and education each month in an informal discussion session with medical experts. Patients, families and interested individuals can learn more about diet and nutrition, exercise, complementary therapies, and stress management as they relate to cancer and cancer treatment. Participants also learn valuable information and resources about symptom management, clinical trials, research and new treatments. Ample opportunity is also available for discussion and sharing with clinical experts as well as with other cancer survivors.

Express Yourself Through Mask Making
June 3 / 1 – 3p.m.
Buckeye Garden Conference Room – University Hospital East

 
Are the ways you express your inner feelings related to having cancer similar or different to how you share those feelings with others? Explore and express your inner and outer feelings through this innovative art workshop. Using a variety of art materials, participants will create personal masks. This workshop will be led by an art therapist and is intended for adults with cancer. No artistic experience is necessary and all materials are provided.  Space is limited.

Cooking for Cancer Prevention and Survivorship
June 10 / 6:30 – 8:30p.m. 
The Fawcett Center

This popular two-hour cooking presentation will complement our nutrition lectures and demonstrate quick and easy plant-based recipes. A chef and a registered dietitian will prepare a nutritious meal and discuss how easy healthy eating can be. Participants will receive complimentary dinner, recipes and a list of helpful resources. 

Moving into Joy
June 18 / 6:30 – 8p.m.
Clintonville Woman’s Club

Finding the beat, finding the rhythm is finding the joy in life. Soft and quiet or full and fun, movement uplifts us. This session will guide participants through breathing awareness, the inner dance of meditation and easy movement that can be done in a chair. Michele Mangione, PhD, Somatics, E-R.Y.T. 500 (yoga and dance instructor), will lead this invigorating and revitalizing class.  

Cultivating My Inner Garden
June 28 / 9a.m – 12p.m.
Howlett Hall, OSU Learning Gardens


Explore the metaphor of the garden and its therapeutic value to everyday life in this half-day workshop. You’ll also have the opportunity to symbolize its beauty by creating a special garden hat. No art experience is necessary and all materials and supplies will be provided. Space is limited.

Coming to Terms: Living Fully in the Present
June 24, July 29, August 6 / 6-8p.m.

This series of three classes will guide participants in “coming to terms” with cancer metastasis or recurrence. Group discussion will be combined with expressive therapies to explore reclaiming self-identity; deepening awareness; and adapting to change. The group is intended for anyone who has experienced cancer recurrence or metastasis within the last 12 months. Group size is limited to 12. For optimal participation attendance is recommended at all three sessions. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book, Arriving at Your Own Door: 108 Lessons in Mindfulness.

The Lebed Method, Focus on Healing through Movement and Exercise
Tuesdays, July 8 - August 12 (six week series)
3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
University Hospital East – Wallace Auditorium

The Lebed Method consists of rejuvenating stretches and slow, smooth movements that help to rehabilitate your body, safely and effectively. The simple exercise routines are designed to relieve pain, combat fatigue, enhance balance, and aid in the management of lymphedema. Classes will meet once a week for six weeks in a relaxed atmosphere with uplifting music. Laura Mainzer, PTA, and Oncology/Lymphedema specialist will facilitate. Materials and supplies will be provided. Staying Cool During the Summer Sizzle

“Is it hot in here, or is it just me?” If you are experiencing hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause you won’t want to miss this class. Join us for a relaxing and candid discussion with a nurse practitioner and also receive a menopause survival toolkit. Bring along any questions or concerns you would like to have addressed. Cool refreshments will be provided.

Siblings Sharing Support

Has your sibling been a special part of your cancer journey? If so, you and your sibling are invited to attend this unique workshop in which you can use expressive arts as a way to share special memories and support. Explore the special bonds of your relationship with your sibling and unlock your creative potential in this interactive workshop. No art experience is necessary and all materials and supplies will be provided. Space is limited.     

Prepared Family Caregiver for Cancer Class

Learn problem-solving and decision-making skills to help manage a loved one’s care at home. Susan Scritchfield, LISW and other experienced cancer care professionals guide participants in team building and ways to use expert information. Class includes the opportunity to network with other caregivers and receive information on topics such as nutrition and safe mobility. Reference materials and refreshments provided.
