Eating well during and after cancer treatment is important. For patients recovering from head and neck cancer treatment, shakes are an easy way to get nourishment. Enjoy any or all of these recipes from the National Cancer Institute.
Vera's Banana Milkshake
(A tasty banana shake, rich in potassium.)
- 1 whole ripe banana, sliced
- 1 cup milk
- vanilla extract (few drops)
Measure into blender and blend at high speed until smooth. Serves 1.
Banana-butterscotch: Add 2 Tbsp. butterscotch sauce with banana.
Pearl's Strawberry Milkshake
(The flavor of fresh strawberries, the convenience of the freezer.)
- 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 scoop ice cream
- 1/2 cup milk
Mix or blend until smooth. Serves 1.
High-Protein Milkshake
(A milkshake favorite, fortified with extra protein.)
- 1 cup fortified milk
- 1 generous scoop ice cream
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 Tbsp. butterscotch, chocolate or other favorite fruit syrup or sauce
Measure all ingredients into blender. Blend at low speed about 10 seconds. Serves 1.
Citrus Fake Shake
(Imitation milkshake for people who cannot eat ice cream or drink milk.)
- 1 frozen citrus juice bar (2 1/2 ozs.) or 2 bars (1 3/4 ozs.) same flavor
- 1/2 cup chilled Isomil or Neomullsoy
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
Remove citrus bar from freezer and allow to thaw slightly (about 5-10 minutes). Break bar into pieces into blender. Add other ingredients and blend at low speed for 10 seconds. Serves 1.
Double citrus: Increase your orange juice intake without drinking it by adding 1 Tbsp. frozen orange juice concentrate and 1 Tbsp. sugar to the lemon or orange flavor Fake Shake before blending.
Chocolate Fake Shake
- 1/2 cup chilled or partially frozen Isomil or Neomullsoy
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 Tbsp. milk-free chocolate syrup
Blend all at low speed about 10 seconds. Using the partially frozen liquid will produce a much colder, thicker shake. Serves 1.
