Ohio State is one of only 39 comprehensive cancer centers as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) is a network of cancer-related research programs. More than 265 investigators from 14 colleges at the University conduct studies that contribute to the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The OSUCCC initiates and conducts early phase, innovative clinical trials and participates in the NCI’s cooperation clinical trials system. In order to receive recognition as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the OSUCCC must meet scientific requirements as well as perform outreach, education and cancer information in our community.
The designation was most recently renewed in 2004 with the award of a multimillion dollar support grant over five years. In their review, NCI surveyors gave the OSUCCC a score equivalent to the NCI’s top rating of “outstanding.” The NCI support grant finances the OSUCCC’s administration and funds multiple shared resources that facilitate collaboration among researchers. The OSUCCC contains seven distinct research programs: Cancer Control; Experimental Therapeutics; Immunology; Molecular Biology and Cancer Genetics; Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention; Pediatric Oncology; and Viral Oncogenesis.
